What to Know

With the legalization of sports betting in Tennessee, Action 24/7 aims to provide the best betting options for Tennesseans. To help inform those in the Volunteer State of the betting options they may be unfamiliar with, we’ve put together this series to provide an introduction and overview of how to bet on specific sports.

Tennessee College Basketball Betting – Local Look-In

There are 12 colleges and universities in Tennessee which offer men’s and women’s Division I basketball programs. Those schools are:

Austin Peay

Belmont

East Tennessee State

Lipscomb

Memphis

Middle Tennessee State

Tennessee State

Tennessee Tech

University of Tennessee

University of Tennessee-Chattanooga

University of Tennessee-Martin

Vanderbilt

None of the men’s programs have won a national title, but Memphis has finished as the national runner-up twice. The Tennessee Lady Vols dominate the women’s scene, having made every NCAA Tournament since the event’s inception in 1982, the only program to do so.

The eight-time national champions trail only UConn (11) in national title count.

Tennessee College Basketball Betting – How to Bet

The NCAA Tournaments are the biggest betting events in college basketball betting, but you don’t have to wait for March Madness to place your wagers.

One of the most popular betting types is a “moneyline” bet. Moneyline bets involve picking a winner, with different payouts based on the strength or weakness of the teams playing.

An example of a moneyline bet might show up as “Chattanooga (+155) at Tennessee Tech (-130). In this case, Chattanooga is the underdog (the “+” sign always denotes the underdog), and Tennessee Tech is the favorite (the “-“ sign will always appear next to the favorite).

A bet on Tennessee Tech would need to be $130 to win $100 if Tech emerges victorious. Conversely, a $100 bet on Chattanooga would scoop $155 if the Mocs pulled the upset.

Another popular bet type is betting against the spread (sometimes shortened to ATS). Betting against the spread involves picking a winner but also picking the margin of victory.

This betting line could read as “Memphis (-6.5) at Tennessee (+6.5).” Here, betting on Memphis to win would mean the Tigers would need to win by at least seven points for a bet to win. A bet on Tennessee would pay out if Tennessee pulled the upset or lost by six points or fewer.

Finally, if you’re not comfortable or confident enough to pick a winner, you could bet on the “over/under” or “total.” When betting the over/under, you must choose whether you think the combined point total between the two teams will be over or under a predetermined score.

If the Lipscomb-Belmont game had an over/under of 131.5, a winning “over” bet would hit whether Lipscomb won 67-66 or Belmont won 90-55. Betting the over/under can also be a great hedge when picking a winner to potentially cut your losses or to win by a larger margin.

Regardless of the type of bet you choose, you should always make an informed bet. Do your homework to study lineups, trends, injuries, schedules, and team strategies to put yourself in the best spot to win.
