What to Know
With the legalization of sports betting in Tennessee, Action 247 aims to provide the best betting options for Tennesseans. To help inform those in the Volunteer State of the betting options they may be unfamiliar with, we’ve put together this series to provide an introduction and overview of how to bet on specific sports.
Tennessee Sports Betting – Hockey Betting Overview
The most important thing when betting is to do your research beforehand. Is a team playing on the second night of back-to-back games? Which goalie is in the starting lineup?
Is a superstar player out sick or injured? Which players have been performing well lately, and which have been struggling? All are important to know before placing a bet.
When betting on hockey, there are a few options for picking your winner.
The most common type of hockey bet is on the moneyline. Moneyline bets simply involve picking the winner of the game, with payouts varying based on which team is favored.
If, for example, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars are playing, the moneyline may read Lightning (-162) vs. Stars (+140). This means if you are betting on the Lightning, you will need to bet $162 to win $100
But, if you think the Stars will win and you place your wager there, betting $100 would pay out $140 if Dallas wins.
Another option is to bet on the goal-scoring total, which represents the combined number of goals between the two teams. Usually, this number is set at somewhere around 4.5 or 5.5, but that may vary depending on the offensive, defensive, and/or goaltending quality of a team.
If the oddsmakers set a goals total of 5.5, they think half the bettors will take the under (five or fewer goals), and half will take the over (six goals or more). Shootout goals do not count towards the over/under total.
If you’re really feeling adventurous, look for prop bet options. These can include (though are certainly not limited to): Which player will score the first goal, whether or not a certain player will record an assist, over/under on goalie saves total, whether a team will score on the power play, will there be a shorthanded goal, and many more.
Tennessee Sports Betting – Local Hockey Options
The Nashville Predators are the only NHL team in the state, making them the easiest local option to bet on. Additionally, the Knoxville Ice Bears compete in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). The Ice Bears have won four SPHL championships.
The Predators have not won a championship since their founding in 1998, but their 82-game regular season provides ample betting opportunities. The Predators have also made the playoffs each of the past six seasons and advanced to the Stanley Cup Final in 2017.
