History of the Portland Timbers

The Portland Timbers are a professional soccer team based in Portland, Oregon. The team was originally founded in 2009. Eventually, they began playing in Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2011 as the league’s 18th franchise.

In the end, the Timbers have a rich history and passionate fan base, dating back to the team’s original incarnation in the NASL.  During this time, in the 1970s, the Timbers were known for their intense rivalries with other West Coast teams. Furthermore, some of these include the Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps.

Timbers Make Their Debut

In 2011, the Timbers made their debut in MLS, playing their home games at Providence Park, a historic stadium in downtown Portland. Because they were new, the team struggled in the first few seasons. However, in 2013, the Timbers won their first major trophy, the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Since then, the Timbers have continued to build a strong team and fan culture. Additionally, they went on to win the Western Conference in 2015. Then, they reached the MLS Cup Finals, where they were defeated by the Columbus Crew. In 2018, the Timbers won the Cascadia Cup. This was a trophy awarded to the team with the best record in matches against their regional rivals, the Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps.

The Timbers have a number of notable players, including Diego Valeri. He was named MLS MVP in 2017. Next, there is Darlington Nagbe, a talented midfielder who has represented the United States at the international level. Finally, there is Sebastian Blanco, a dynamic attacking player.

Off the field, the Timbers have been active in community initiatives, including the “Stand Together” campaign. This campaign moreover supports local non-profit organizations that focus on youth activity, education, and the environment.

Passionate Fanbase

The Timbers’ fan base is known for their passionate support of the team. In the end, they have developed several traditions, including the “Timbers Army.” This is a large and vocal group of supporters who lead chants and create an electric atmosphere at Providence Park.

Next, the Timbers are focused on building a winning culture and continuing to compete at the highest level in MLS. However, one thing is for sure, the Timbers have a passionate fan base and commitment to excellence on and off the field. In the end, the Timbers are poised for continued success.
