In 1974, the Pacific Division was added, and the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Clippers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Phoenix Suns were added to the Western Conference.

The Southwest Division was formed in 2004 and the Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs, Memphis Grizzlies, and New Orleans Pelicans, were added to the conference. Finally, the Northwest Division was formed in 2004 and includes the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, Portland Trail Blazers, and Utah Jazz.

The success of the Western Conference
