Wake Forest Deacons vs North Carolina Tarheels Bad Beat College Football Picks

Our bad beat of the week this week is Wake Forest’s (+2.5) monumental collapse against the North Carolina Tarheels on Saturday. If you followed my college football picks on Saturday, which for your bank account’s sake I hope you did not, you know I had Wake money line in this one. Even though this one hits close to home, I will do my best to keep emotion out of it while breaking it down.

Wake Forest could do no wrong through the first three and quarters of football on Saturday. Sure their defense wasn’t playing the best, but UNC has a high flying offense so giving up points was expected. Their offense was humming and at the 7:38 mark of the third quarter, they found themselves leading 45-27. The Tarheels added a score to cut it to an 11 point lead, but Wake responded with a field goal with about a minute left in the quarter. The Demon Deacons took a two touchdown lead into the fourth.

Now this is where the wheels totally fell off. UNC head coach Mac Brown must have put the fear of God into this team in between quarters, because this was a new team in the fourth. Former Vol–salt in the wound–Ty Chandler ran for 125 and three scores in the final quarter alone.

One of Chandler’s touchdowns came about four minutes into the quarter to cut the lead to seven. This is when I started sweating. He added his second touchdown of the quarter just a minute later to tie the game. This is when I knew the game was over.

Wake turned it over on downs and UNC methodically marched down the field and added a go-ahead field goal. Still 2:12 left, but not a lot of hope. The Deacs got the ball back but quickly turned it over on downs again. Then, almost as if to spite me, Chandler takes a 50 yard run to the house to give the Tarheels a 10 point lead with a minute remaining.

Wake added a garbage time touchdown just to prove Vegas right, and North Carolina left with a three point victory. I couldn’t believe my eyes. A game that was cruising for 75% of the game turned to a loss in the blink of an eye. I hate college football. But obviously I’ll be back next week ready to get my heart ripped out again.
