Carolina Hurricanes Odds and Predictions

NHL Team Preview: Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes are looking to take another step after their season this past year. Last season they won the Central Division with a 36-12-8 record. That was good for 80 points during the regular season, which gave them the third-most points of any team last year. The Hurricanes got to the playoffs as the top seed and won their first-round matchup with Nashville. However, the Hurricanes fell in the second round.

The NHL playoffs were a little different format last season, which led them to fall against the second-place team in their division. The eventual champions, the Tampa Bay Lightning, beat the Hurricanes in the second round pretty easily 4-1. The Hurricanes only scored 11 goals in the series, which included a four-point outing in a loss.

The Hurricanes are looking to use the momentum from last year to build to a very good season this year. They will contend for the Stanley Cup again this season, but getting there may prove to be a little different. There are a lot of new faces in Carolina this year. While the core will stay the same, there will be somewhat of a new look to this team.

Big Additions

The Hurricanes will have most of their core intact from last year but did make quite a few new additions. Frederik Andersen, Josh Leivo, Antti Raanta, Ethan Bear, Derek Stepan, Ian Cole, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Anthony DeAngelo, and Brendan Smith will bring some new life to the fringes of this club. The two new additions that stand over the most are going to be Andersen and Raanta. They are both goalies and will be counted on to mind the net for the Hurricanes this year. They are both coming off injuries but have the potential to make an impact. For the Hurricanes to find success, their goalies will need to perform.

Impactful Subtractions

Carolina loses both of their goalies from a year ago and will look to two new goalies to keep the puck away from the back of the net. The other big loss was Dougie Hamilton on the defensive side of the ice. The Hurricanes are very good defensively, but a loss like Hamilton is a big one that can’t be understated.

Key Players

Andersen and Raanta are going to be two key players that the Hurricanes will need to rely on. They need to prove they are healthy early on in the season if they want to compete with the top of the NHL. The main key player for this group is going to be Kotkaniemi. He is used to playing center but will be moved over to the wing this year, which might open up his game. Carolina is hoping that it allows him to be more efficient offensively.
