CFB Upset of the week Northern Arizona taking down Arizona

Upset Special

Our upset of the week for week three of college football is Northern Arizona (+26.5) taking down in-state foe Arizona.

Coming into the game, Arizona was looking for their first win of the season. You couldn’t blame Wildcat fans for thinking this would be an easy win, seeing as they had not lost to NAU since 1932. But the Lumberjacks had different plans.

Much like Arizona, NAU was also looking for their first win of the season. But fans probably weren’t expecting their first victory to come against a team they had not beaten since prohibition ended.

However, those expectations changed in the third quarter when Lumberjack freshman Kevin Daniels found the endzone on a 12 yard run to take a 14-13 lead. NAU would add another touchdown to their lead in the 4th to make it an eight point game. But the Wildcats weren’t finished yet.

With 2:16 left, Arizona found paydirt when receiver Boobie Curry caught a 3-yard pass from Jordan McCloud. They would have to go for 2 in order to tie the game. Like the previous play, McCloud dropped back to pass but was hit as he threw, causing the ball to bounce into the hands of his receiver. No good. Ball game. The Lumberjacks make history.

In a cruel twist of fate, Arizona also had to pay $500,000 to the team who handed them one of the worst losses in school history. A bettor would have had to bet the money line (+1600) at about $3,200 to get that payout.

As for Arizona, I’m not sure where they go from here. They have now lost 15 in a row and it doesn’t get any easier going forward. Things are looking grim in the desert.Â
