Sony Open in Hawaii; Jan 13-16, 2022
Welcome back to the best napping event of the year. The PGA is back! I will be guiding you through the ever-unpredictable string of events that is golf and the personalities that are on the PGA Tour. And hopefully help you to make some money along the way.
PGA Season Open Last Week with the Sentry Tournament of Champions
If you missed last weekend, the PGA started its season with the Sentry Tournament of Champions on the beautiful islands of Hawai’i. Australian birdie machine Cameron Smith won with a score of -34, which is straight up hilarious. Smith (and three other players) broke the 19-year scoring record set by Ernie Els in the 2003 Mercedes Championships at the same course. What a way to start the year. Smith entered the week as +1400 to win the tournament.
CYB How to Bet Golf:
If you are unfamiliar with betting golf, there are a few terms to get to know.
To win – Easy enough, the player to win the whole tournament.
Top X – This player finishes within your segment. For example, last week Jordan Spieth was +110 to finish in the Top 10.
Matchups – A one-on-one battle.
Props – These are more popular in major tournaments. Hole-in-one for example.
PGA Sony Open Picks:
To make the Top 20 - Brian Harman +235
After doing some research, it seems like the small-ball hitters are plentiful this week. This, of course, fits lefty Brian Harman, who ranked 147th last year on driving distance. He did, however, rank 30th in fairways hit, fifth in total putting and – most importantly – only missed four cuts last year. The University of Georgia alumna might be flying high after their huge National Championship win. Combine that with some fresh Hawai’i air. Brian Harman Top 20.
One-on-one – the Battle of the Kevins!
Kevin Na vs. Kevin Kisner should be fun. Kisner comes in as the underdog +115 with Na at -130. Kisner has three top-fives at this course and has made his last six cuts. Na did win the tournament last year, but I’ll take the risk. Another Georgia Bulldog gets the slight edge in the best Kevin duel the Islands have ever seen.
Winner - Webb Simpson
Webb Simpson has made nine cuts at the Sony Open, finishing top five in his last three. Might be a bit chalky of a play, but +1500 is nothing to sneeze at.
