Here’s an overview of some of the top games in sports being played on June 8. Today, we’re taking a closer look at five games from Major League Baseball and the NBA Finals.
Seattle Mariners vs. Houston Astros – 6:40 PM ET
The Seattle Mariners will stay in Houston for Game 3 against the Astros. Seattle has split the first two games, winning Game 1 and losing Game 2. Both teams are starting impressive pitchers tonight, with the 5-2 Logan Gilbert starting for the Mariners. Gilbert has an ERA of 2.22 this season over the course of 65.0 innings.
The Houston Astros are 36-20 this season and are 15-7 at home. Each of these teams has relatively strong batting as well, with the Mariners having a slight edge. Getting the start on the mound for Houston is Jose Urquidy, who is also 5-2 this season. Urquidy has an ERA of 4.76, which is considerably worse than Gilbert. We’ll go with Seattle tonight +120.
New York Yankees vs. Minnesota Twins – 7:40 PM ET
The Yankees are on a seven-game winning streak heading into tonight’s game. With a record of 40-15 this season, the Yankees rank first in the AL East. Nestor Cortes has a 5-1 record as a starting pitcher and will take the mound today. With how the Twins have struggled against the Yankees, New York will likely win this game as well.
The Twins have a record of 32-25 this season and rank first in the AL Central. Yesterday, the Twins were beaten by the Yankees 10-4 and Minnesota will hope to avoid that outcome again. On the mound for the Twins is Chris Archer, who has an 0-2 record as a starter this season. Archer’s ERA is 3.89 which is okay, but not as good as Cortes’ 1.50. The Yankees are also 110-38 against the Twins since 2002.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Chicago White Sox – 8:10 PM ET
In our third game of the day, the Los Angeles Dodgers will face the Chicago White Sox. With a record of 35-20, Los Angeles ranks first in the NL West. Tony Gonsolin, the starting pitcher for Los Angeles, has a 6-0 record as a starter. Gonsolin also has an ERA of 1.59 this season. However, the Dodgers have lost their last three games, one of which to the White Sox.
On the opposite side, we’ve got the Chicago White Sox at 26-27. With only one game away from a .500 record, the White Sox are looking for a fast start. Against Gonsolin, however, it’ll be tough for them to get an early lead over Los Angeles. They’ve won their last three games but this is where the streak ends. We’ll take the Dodgers -175 tonight.
Golden State Warriors vs. Boston Celtics – 9:00 PM ET
We’re heading into Game 3 of the NBA Finals today and the series is tied 1-1. The Golden State Warriors were able to bounce back and get a 107-88 win in Game 2. Now, they’ll have to face the Boston Celtics in Boston, where the Celtics are 28-13. Golden State could see a few players added back into their lineup, the most notable being Gary Payton II.
The Boston Celtics offense was drastically slowed down in Game 2. They were held to 88 points and didn’t shoot well at 37.5%. Because of this poor shooting, the Warriors were able to get a win over them to tie the series. Tonight, the Celtics need to be better from the perimeter and find a way to stop Stephen Curry. Still, we’ll take Golden State +3.5 tonight.
New York Mets vs. San Diego Padres – 9:40 PM ET
The New York Mets are among the best teams in Major League Baseball. Tonight, they’ll face the San Diego Padres, another top team in the NL West. The Mets, with a record of 38-20 will send out the 4-3 Chris Bassitt to the mound. Bassitt has an ERA of 3.74 this season over the course of 65.0 innings. They also have one of the top batting averages at .264.
The San Diego Padres are coming off of a 7-0 win over the New York Mets yesterday. After such a dominant victory, momentum is flowing in their direction. The Padres come into this game as -130 favorites, but we don’t think they’re the best pick. Sean Manaea, the starting pitcher, has a 2-3 record this season. We’ll go with the Mets +110 in tonight’s game.
