To start, many know that the NCAA March Madness tournament is, no doubt, one of the most exciting events in college sports. The first round of the tournament features many underdog teams looking to upset their higher-ranked opponents. Overall, some of those teams turn their dreams into reality. In the end, Fairleigh Dickinson was one of those underdogs that made it happen. Previously, they shocked the nation by beating the No. 1 seed, Purdue. Recently, the No. 16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson took on the No. 9 seed Florida Atlantic. Let’s take a look at the game’s recap. 

Game Summary

In the beginning, Florida Atlantic came out with a lot of energy and established a lead over Fairleigh Dickinson to start. In the beginning, the FDU Knights struggled to get their offense going. Yet, they soon got back into the game just before the second half. At the half, FDU had a four-point lead overall. 

Next, in the second half, Fairleigh Dickinson tried to keep their small lead. Yet, Florida Atlantic responded with more baskets and held off the late surge from Fairleigh Dickinson. Meanwhile, the Owls ended up winning the game 78-70.

Player Performances

For Florida Atlantic, it was Johnell Davis and Alijah Martin who led the way. Overall, they had a total of 43 points combined. Johnell Davis did exceptionally well scoring a total of 29 points. Also, he had 12 rebounds and a total of five assists and five steals.  

Implications

In conclusion, the win for Florida Atlantic means that Fairleigh Dickinson won’t be able to make history as the first No. 16 seed to make it to the Sweet 16.  However, it is the first time Florida Atlantic will go to the Sweet 16. Finally, the Owls will now advance to face the Tennesse Volunteers. 

For Fairleigh Dickinson, the loss marks the end of their season. Despite the disappointing result, the Knights can be proud of their accomplishments this year. In the end, they made history by taking down the No. 1 seed, Purdue.
