In Justin Herbert’s rookie season, the Los Angeles Chargers went 7-9 in 2020-2021. It was a bit of a deceiving record, as Los Angeles blew several fourth-quarter leads and could have easily finished with a winning season.Herbert was named NFL Rookie of the Year, finishing with a quarterback rating of 98 and throwing for 31 touchdowns. Star receiver Keenan Allen led the way with 992 receiving yards and starting running back Austin Ekeler averaged 4.6 yards per carry. Head coach Lance Lynn was fired after missing the playoffs for the second year in a row. 38-year-old Brandon Staley was hired as the new HC in January. Staley was the defensive coordinator for the Rams vaunted defense last season.The Chargers really improved their offensive line to protect Herbert in the offseason, drafting offensive tackle Rashawn Slater’s 13th overall. Los Angeles also signed All-Pro center Corey Linsley, plus guards Matt Feiler and Oday Aboushi. There were some big free agency losses elsewhere for the Chargers, however. Pro Bowl edge rusher Melvin Ingram, longtime corner Casey Hayward, and tight end Hunter Henry signed elsewhere.Veteran Jared Cook was signed in March to replace Henry. One of the biggest additions for Los Angeles will be getting All-Pro safety Derwin James back on the field this season. The 25-year-old safety missed the entire 2020-2021 season recovering from a torn meniscus that he suffered in 2019. If you bet on Los Angeles last season, the Chargers went 9-7 against the spread and covered their final four games.
