North Carolina Tar Heels #19 NCAA Basketball AP Poll

North Carolina Tar Heels #19 Preseason NCAA Basketball

ACC, 18-11

After 18 seasons and three national championships with the Tar Heels, head coach Roy Williams decided it was time to step down following a first-round loss to Wisconsin in the NCAA tournament that concluded a two-year mark of 32-30.

He is succeeded by long-time Tar Heel assistant coach and former player Hubert Davis, who takes over the following nine years on Williams’ staff.

Davis inherits a team that has a lot of potential but needs to improve offensively, with the 2020-2021 unit averaging just over 75 points a game, 75th in Division I. They were 268th in three-point field goal shooting at 31.9%, something that the new head coach is likely to improve with a change in offensive philosophy.

With a mix of returning starters, experienced reserves, and transfers at key positions, Davis has the potential on his roster to finish much better than their AP preseason ranking, but they play in a tough conference and face three top-ten opponents in Purdue, Michigan, and UCLA in their first ten games.

Those early tests will provide a good indication of whether Davis will thrive or struggle in his first year as the leader of one of the premier programs in college basketball.
