History of the New England Revolution
The New England Revolution, also known as the Revs, is a professional soccer team based in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The team was founded in 1994. Later, the team joined MLS as one of the league’s ten charter members in 1996.
In the team’s early years, the Revolution struggled to find success on the field. It finished last in the Eastern Conference in each of its first three seasons. However, the team began to turn things around in 2000. This was due to its newly hired head coach, Bruce Arena.
Under Arena’s leadership, the Revolution became one of the top teams in MLS. The team made the playoffs in eight of the next nine seasons. During this time, the team featured several star players. Some included Taylor Twellman, who is the team’s all-time leading scorer, and Shalrie Joseph, who was a key contributor in midfield.
New England Revolution’s Struggles
Despite their regular season success, the Revolution struggled to win MLS Cup. It reached the final five times but never lifted the trophy. In 2007, the team made it to the final for the first time in franchise history. Yet, the Revolution lost to the Houston Dynamo in a closely contested match.
In recent years, the Revolution has continued to be a competitive team in MLS. The team’s current roster features several promising young players. Some of these include the US Men’s National Team midfielder and former academy product, Diego Fagundez.
Off the field, the Revolution have been active in their local community. They have partnered with several organizations to promote youth soccer and improve access to it in underserved communities. The team also plays a role in the larger New England sports landscape. Overall, they have several cross-promotions and partnerships with other local professional sports teams.
The Revolution play their home games at Gillette Stadium. This is which is also home to the NFL’s New England Patriots. While the stadium’s large size can make for a less intimate atmosphere, the Revolution have made strides to improve the matchday experience. Some of these strides include a recent stadium renovation and the creation of a dedicated supporter’s section.
