What to Know About Memphis

With the legalization of sports betting in Tennessee, Action 247 aims to provide the best betting options for Tennesseans. To help inform those in the Volunteer State of the betting options that are available locally, we have put together a series highlighting Tennessee betting options.

Memphis Sports Betting – It Starts at School

It's hard to talk about sports betting in Memphis without talking about the Memphis Tigers, especially the basketball program. The Tigers' men's basketball program has won 14 regular-season conference titles to go with 11 conference tournament championships.

The Tigers have also made 11 Sweet Sixteen appearances, three Final Fours, and have twice been the national runner-up.

The Tigers basketball program has produced eight All-Americans, most recently Chris Douglas-Roberts and Derrick Rose in 2008. Precious Achiuwa was named the 2019-20 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Current head coach Penny Hardaway, a Memphis alum, was a four-time NBA All-Star and was twice named to the All-NBA First Team.

The women's basketball team has also made seven NCAA Tournament appearances.

Memphis' football program has made a bowl game in six consecutive seasons and won conference titles in 2014 and 2019. Notable alumni include NFL Hall of Famer Isaac Bruce, three-time Super Bowl champion Stephen Gostkowski, and two-time Pro Bowler Dontari Poe.

Memphis Sports Betting – Gotta Go Grizzlies

Memphis is lucky enough to have a professional franchise right in its backyard! The Grizzlies relocated to Memphis in 2001 after spending the previous six seasons in Vancouver.

In their 19 seasons in Tennessee, the Grizzlies have made the playoffs 10 times. While the team has struggled recently, it is building around budding superstar Ja Morant, who was the 2019-20 NBA Rookie of the Year.

When betting on the Grizzlies, you should consider over/under point totals for each game, as well as over/under season win totals. Watch out for back-to-back games, where either the Grizzlies or their opponents may be resting players on the second night.

Memphis Sports Betting – Other Memphis Betting Opportunities

Memphis 901 FC made their United Soccer League (USL) debut in 2019. The USL is the second-highest level of soccer play in the United States, trailing only Major League Soccer (MLS).

Memphis 901's goalkeeper Tim Howard has been a star for the U.S. Men's National Team and should continue to thrive with Memphis FC.

The Liberty Bowl has been played in Memphis since 1965 and has been sponsored by Memphis-based AutoZone since 2004. The Memphis Tigers made an appearance in the Liberty Bowl in 2017, losing 21-20 to Iowa State. The game is usually played in late December on the 30th or 31st of the month.
