Daily Sports Bets for Thursday, May 5

Here’s an overview of some of the top games in sports being played on May 5. Today, we’re taking a closer look at five games from the NHL and Major League Baseball.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Cleveland Guardians – 6:10 PM ET

The Toronto Blue Jays have a strong batting lineup along with some good pitching. Today, they face a tough test in the Cleveland Guardians. On the mound for the Blue Jays is Jose Berrios who is 2-0 this season with an ERA of 4.13. He’s thrown 20 strikeouts in 24 innings pitched and his team has a batting average of .241.

The Guardians might be in trouble on the mound today with Aaron Civale starting. Civale has a record of 0-2 this season with an ERA of 10.67. In terms of batting, they have a slight edge on the Blue Jays. As a team, the Guardians are batting .252, they’ve also won four of their last five games. Still, we’ll take the Blue Jays -160 over the Guardians.

Washington Capitals vs. Florida Panthers – 7:30 PM ET

Considering there aren’t any NBA games tonight, we’ll head to the NHL Playoffs. The Washington Capitals, lead this series 1-0 after a surprising 4-2 victory. They’ll look to have the same luck over the Panthers tonight. If they can win another game on the road here, they’ll return home leading 2-0.

The Florida Panthers can’t allow the above scenario to happen. Having to battle back from two games down is a tough task, especially with two games on the road. Jonathan Huberdeau will need to have a big game against the Capitals defense here. The Panthers average 4.11 goals per game, they’ll need that kind of offense tonight.

Detroit Tigers vs. Houston Astros – 8:10 PM ET

Ranking fourth in the AL Central, the Tigers will face another team from the American League tonight. The Tigers have won just two of their last five games and are coming off of a 7-2 loss. This is the first game of a four-game series against the Astros and Tarik Skubal will be on the mound. Skubal is 1-2 in three starts with an ERA of 3.05 in 20.2 innings pitched.

The Houston Astros won three games in a row over the Seattle Mariners. Tonight, they can extend their winning streak to four with a win over the Tigers. Houston will send Jose Urquidy to the mound who has a record of 2-1 as a starter. Look for the batters of Houston to get an early lead and keep it to win the game.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Seattle Mariners – 9:40 PM ET

The Tampa Bay Rays recently swept the Oakland Athletics and now have eyes on the Mariners. With the team batting average at .245, the Rays rank sixth in Major League Baseball. They’ll try to put these batters to use against the Mariners tonight. Shane McClanahan will take the mound for the Rays and hope to put a strike in the win column.

McClanahan is 1-2 as a starting pitcher and faces the Mariners Robbie Ray tonight. Ray has gone 2-2 as a starter with a 4.15 ERA over the course of 30.1 innings pitched. Through those innings, Ray has allowed 26 hits with 26 strikeouts. Seattle’s batters are also pretty strong, averaging a .231 batting average this season. Still, we’ll take the Rays to win this one.

Dallas Stars vs. Calgary Flames – 10:00 PM ET

Down 0-1 in the series, the Stars are hoping to win one on the road tonight. The first game ended in only a narrow loss for the Stars, losing 1-0. The biggest difference between these two is average goals per game. The Stars only average 2.84 goals per game, while giving up an average of 2.98.

The Flames average 3.55 goals per game but also give up fewer goals per game than the Stars. As a team, Calgary allows a small 2.55 goals per game, ranking as one of the best in the NHL. We think the Flames will win Game 2 tonight and take a 2-0 lead on the Dallas Stars.
