Atlantic 10, 16-5
St. Bonaventure is ranked in the AP preseason poll for the first time since 1970, the season following a Final Four appearance and 91-83 loss to Jacksonville in the national semifinals. In his 15th season, head coach Mark Schmidt is attempting to take the Bonnies to back-to-back NCAA tournaments in program history after losing to LSU 76-61 in the first round last season.
Despite a schedule disrupted by Covid-19 related cancellations, St. Bonaventure was able to make it into the tournament as a ninth seed and have high expectations for 2021-2022, with all five starters returning for a team that won the Atlantic 10 and also added a pair of transfers from ACC teams Pittsburgh and Wake Forest.
The Bonnies are the only A-10 team in the preseason rankings, but the league has traditionally tough teams like Virginia Commonwealth, St. Joseph’s, and Dayton providing stiff competition.
St. Bonaventure has a couple of chances to make a big impression on the NCAA selection committee with early games against 24th ranked UConn out of the Big East and highly regarded Virginia Tech from the ACC.
If they can avoid injuries and take advantage of the experience of their starting five, it could be a very special season for the Bonnies, and they should be able to make history for their program.
