The US Women’s soccer team was the one to watch at this year’s World Cup in New Zealand and Australia. At first, they came in with a bang and were ready to take the world stage. As reigning champions, they also anticipated doing great things in this year’s tournament. However, in a recent match against Sweden, they were ultimately defeated.

Let’s look at this final match in the Women’s World Cup for the USWNT.

An Unexpected Upset for the USWNT

The USWNT was thrown for a loop at the recent upset against Sweden. The US fans were also stunned as their beloved team was thrown out of the tournament.

Yet, in the end, it was the penalty kicks that lost it for team US. Their missed cost them the game. They allowed Sweden some leverage, and therefore they were able to take home the victory.

In the end, Goalie for the USWNT, Alyssa Naeher, tried to block the final penalty kick by Sweden. However, the ball crossed the line by just inches. Meanwhile, the entire US team fought back tears as the reality sunk in that they had lost.

Some of the USWNT players have announced that they will be retiring after this year. Many fans are heartbroken after seeing some of their favorite players take the field for the last time.

Looking Ahead at the USWNT

Looking ahead, the USWNT is still optimistic about years to come. There are so many new members that are sure to show a lot of potential in the coming years. Thought many of the greats have retired, we can be sure that the USWNT will be a strong hold in years to come.
