MLB National League East New York Mets 2022

Last season, the Mets finished middle of the pack in the NL East with a 77-85 record. While they finished third in the division, they were still 11.5 games behind the division-winning Atlanta Braves.

Heading in 2022, there are high expectations for a team that has plenty of star talent. With players like Jacob deGrom, Pete Alonso, and Francisco Lindor, the core is ready to win.

The owner has also shown a willingness to put a quality club on the field. Prior to the MLB lockout, the Mets had already signed Max Scherzer, Mark Canha, Eduardo Escobar, and Starling Marte to contracts.

While that already seems like a haul for the upcoming season, it would not be shocking to see continued activity prior to the start of the 2022 season.

While the team has made some notable acquisitions, they did have some major losses as well. Javier Baez, Marcus Stroman, and Noah Syndergaard have signed elsewhere, while Michael Conforto and others are free agents.

Winning in 2022 won’t be easy within a very competitive division, but the Mets currently are tied for the third-best odds of winning the World Series next season.

While they may rely on bounce-back performances and good health, any club that has Scherzer and deGrom atop the rotation and Alonso and Lindor in the heart of the lineup definitely have to be taken seriously.

For Mets fans, they are hoping that this is the season they can get back to the postseason, hopefully even ending a 36-year World Series title drought.

MLB National League East New York Mets History

While the New York Mets constantly fight with their intra-city rivals, the New York Yankees, for headlines, the “Metropolitans” have their own rich history.

As one of the first National League expansion teams in baseball, the Mets’ first season was in 1962. The Mets actually were first introduced as a way of giving New York another NL team as both the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers had both departed the city.

The Mets were one of two NL expansion teams this year, along with the Houston Colt .45s (later renamed the Astros). These two organizations took part in an expansion draft in October of 1961.

The Mets’ first selection, second overall, was catcher Hobie Landrith, selected from the San Francisco Giants.

The rest of their top-five picks included infielder Elio Chacon (Reds), pitcher Roger Craig (Dodgers), outfielder Gus Bell (Reds), and outfielder Joe Christopher (Pirates).

Since the creation of divisions in 1969, the Mets have been a part of the NL East.

Going back to their first season in 1962, the Mets’ franchise has a record just under .500. They are a combined 4,551 – 4,927, good for a .480 winning percentage.

The Mets have played in three stadiums throughout their team’s history. They started in the historic Polo Grounds for the 1962 and 1963 seasons. In 1964, they moved into Shea Stadium, where they remained until 2008. Since 2009, the team has called Citi Field home.
