Here’s an overview of some of the top games in sports being played on June 24. Today, we’re taking a closer look at five games from Major League Baseball and the NHL Playoffs.
New York Mets vs. Miami Marlins – 6:40 PM ET
The New York Mets have one of the best records in Major League Baseball. However, even with their record of 45-26, they’ve lost three of their last five. Tonight, they’ll face the Marlins, a team they lost to on June 19th. Taking the mound for them tonight is the 5-2 Taijuan Walker, who has an ERA of 2.88. Miami is sending out their best pitcher to face Walker tonight.
Walker’s opponent is the 7-2 Sandy Alcantara, who has an ERA of 1.72. Alcantara has had an incredible season and will look to take down one of the best teams tonight. He’ll have to be careful though as the Mets have one of the best batting teams in the league. With a team batting average of .261, the Mets are a tough team to beat. We’ll take New York +125.
Boston Red Sox vs. Cleveland Guardians – 7:10 PM ET
Moving on we’ll see the Boston Red Sox face the Cleveland Guardians. The Red Sox are another team with incredible batting and strong pitching. As a team, the Red Sox are batting .258 this season with an on-base percentage of .319. Taking the mound for Boston is Nick Pivetta, who is 7-5 as a starter with a 3.31 ERA.
The Cleveland Guardians are no slouches at the plate either. This season, the Guardians have an average of .250 and an ERA of .311. They’ll need to get a fast start against the Red Sox if they want to win this one though. The 4-4 Cal Quantrill will get the start for the Guardians and we’ll take Cleveland to win at home.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Atlanta Braves – 7:20 PM ET
The Dodgers pulled off an impressive 10-5 win over the Reds yesterday. Led by Clayton Kershaw, the Dodgers will always be a hard team to beat. However, they’re starting Julio Urias today, who has had some trouble this season. He has a record of 4-6 this season but has an impressive ERA of 2.56.
Although they’re facing Urias, the Braves still have a tough game in front of them. They’re coming off a solid win over San Francisco, which improved their record to 41-30. On the mound for them tonight is Ian Anderson, who is 6-3 with a 4.35 ERA. Although Urias has a losing record, we’ll still take the Dodgers on the road here at -130.
Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Colorado Avalanche – 8:00 PM ET
The NHL Stanley Cup Finals continue tonight between the Lightning and the Avalanche. At the moment, the Avalanche leads the series 3-1. The Lightning face elimination and the worse news is that they’re on the road. Defense is something the Lightning desperately needs to tap into, along with the ability to score.
This series has been all Colorado so far and it’s been more about control than anything else. In the last game, the Avalanche put 41 hits on the Lightning, compared to Tampa Bay’s 29. In terms of shots on goal, the Avalanche actually had less than the Lightning. They’ve controlled the pace of the game, which is why we think they’ll end the series tonight.
Detroit Tigers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks – 9:40 PM ET
The Detroit Tigers have a 26-43 record but tonight they have a favorable matchup. Playing the Arizona Diamondbacks should give the Tigers a bit of a chance to win. However, it won’t be a walk in the park for Detroit. On the mound is the 1-2 Rony Garcia, who has an ERA of 4.97 this season. It also doesn’t help that the Tigers have a team batting average of .226.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are actually worse in terms of batting averages at .215. This team has struggled through the season to even get on base. However, they do have an advantage in terms of pitching with Merrill Kelly on the mound. Kelly has a record of 6-4 with a 3.46 ERA. We’ll go with the Diamondbacks to barely win this one at home.
