Columbus Blue Jacket

History of the Columbus Blue Jackets

The Columbus Blue Jackets are a professional ice hockey team based in Columbus, Ohio. The franchise was founded in 2000 as an expansion team. In addition, they joined the National Hockey League (NHL) as part of the league’s expansion into non-traditional hockey markets. They are part of the Metropolitan Division.

Early Years

In their early years, the Blue Jackets struggled to find their footing, missing the playoffs in each of their first seven seasons. However, the team’s fortunes began to turn in the late 2000s. In the end, this was thanks in part to the acquisition of star forward Rick Nash.

In the 2008-09 season, the Blue Jackets made their first playoff appearance in franchise history. Yet, they were eliminated in the first round by the Detroit Red Wings. The team returned to the playoffs the following year, but again failed to advance past the first round.

Despite these early setbacks, the Blue Jackets remained committed to building a competitive team. In the 2012-13 season, the team hired John Davidson as president of hockey operations. Finally, he began to implement a new strategy focused on drafting and developing young talent.

This approach paid off in the 2016-17 season, when the Blue Jackets had the best regular season in franchise history. Overall, they finished with a record of 50-24-8. Led by standout performances from players like Cam Atkinson and Sergei Bobrovsky, the team made it to the playoffs for the third time in franchise history. Finally, they were eliminated in the first round by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Since their successful 2016-17 season, the Blue Jackets have continued to be a competitive team, making the playoffs in two of the past four seasons. However, the team has also faced significant challenges. This included the departure of key players like Artemi Panarin and Bobrovsky in 2019.

Blue Jackets Overcome Setbacks

Despite these setbacks, the Blue Jackets remain a beloved part of Columbus’ sports culture. The team’s dedicated fanbase and commitment to community involvement have helped to make them an important part of the city’s identity.

Overall, the history of the Columbus Blue Jackets is one of perseverance and dedication. Despite early struggles, the team has remained committed to building a competitive franchise. In addition, they have had significant successes in recent years. Whether you’re a die-hard hockey fan or just appreciate a good underdog story, the Columbus Blue Jackets are a team worth rooting for.
